This is a 16 hour training programme which can be
delivered flexibly to suit the needs of learners. This can serve as an induction
for new practitioners, or as a short course for people who are thinking about
entering the childcare profession but do not yet want to commit to a longer
programme of learning.
This course gives an excellent grounding in all the core
aspects of childcare practice. The training is referenced to the NVQ standards
in Children’s Care, Learning and Development for those who go on to undertake an
NVQ.
The course covers the following:
-
Who’s who in the childcare sector? What are the
different types of childcare settings I might be able to work in? What are
the job possibilities that might be available to me? How do I begin a career
in childcare, and what will I have to do to progress in that career?
-
Promoting
positive relationships with adults and children – the importance of
effective communication, removing barriers to communication, creating a
language rich environment, the importance of partnerships with parents and
carers, and confidentiality and data protection.
-
Health
and safety in a childcare setting – you will learn how to keep all
service users safe, about what the law says about health and safety in a
childcare setting, how to follow policies and procedures, how to carry out
risk assessments and do the necessary recording and reporting of accidents
and incidents.
-
Play and child development – during this
session, you will learn the value of play in child development. You will
also learn how to plan activities to support children’s learning.
-
Safeguarding children – you will learn how to
recognise and report signs and symptoms of abuse, how to deal with a child’s
disclosure of abuse, and how to protect yourself from allegations of abuse.
-
Equality and diversity – this session covers
the different types of discrimination, how to challenge discrimination and
how to celebrate diversity both in the environment and in activities you do
with children. It also teaches you how to meet the needs of individual
children and families.
-
Planning the next steps – where will you go
from here? This session covers progression routes, applying for jobs, CV
writing, and creating a plan for professional development.
